“There are 2 good things about long weekends, the first is that the weekend is longer…” -Carleton

I really enjoyed my Labor Day weekend trip to Vermont, it really is a very lovely state. It reminded me a lot of Kentucky in some ways, with the exception of being surrounded by mountains. Carleton’s grandmother lives right on Lake Champlain, so he took me out sailing, which ended up being quite awesome. We also lingered around Burlington, ate at Ben and Jerry’s, saw a moderately decent and good-humored street performer, and ate lunch at the infamous Al’s French Frys twice (yes, they really spell “fries” like that). All in all, a good weekend spent.

Thanks for the support about my Nana, the surgery went very well and she is recovering in ICU right now.

I miss you guys back home (Ken, how is New Orleans?).

yesterday i scrounged trash bins until i found an old plug, which i used to make an adaptor for charging my ipod and camera battery

Bit-o-Humor

Every semester, before all students register for classes, they have to get their courselist approved by their faculty advisor (not anymore for me!). Sheldon (painting professor) often sends out emails to remind his advisees to come and do this early and not wait until the last minute, but the closing words of this term’s email were just too priceless not to post.

“….Lastly, I will not be available during registration week (April 26 – 30), due to a heavy schedule. Don’t procrastinate. If you do, you’ll not get into your courses, miss out on finishing your degree, disappoint your family, ruin your career, be forced into menial disgusting jobs for low pay, and completely fail to attract a desirable mate. So choose those courses now!

Your companion in virtue and industry,

Sheldon ”

Ah, Sheldon, I will miss your awesomeness ^_^

“There are lots of lighthouses in Maine because it’s so big and easy to crash into.” –Carleton

Today is my birthday and I’m 22 years old and I’m having pie instead of cake because…well, it’s not because I don’t like cake, it’s just that the blackberry pie at the store looked so tempting!

This weekend we visited Carleton’s Dad in Maine and, in addition to playing lots of FFX, I got to eat a lobster. ‘Twas quite tasty. I’m a little sad that my visit is coming to an end, but as a birthday present I got a ticket to come up and visit again over spring break (but don’t worry, I’ll be back for Sammy and Will Johnston’s wedding ^_^ ).

I also purchased American Gods for the flight home, though I snuck in a read earlier today. So far I enjoy it, but then again, every book that Brendan recommends to me i end up really enjoying. Hopefully I’ll finish it before the madness of spring term flares up too much. I don’t think it will be terrible, but jumping right into tech as soon as we get back will be a little rough.

Which reminds me..

Collin: “What you don’t know is that plot’s catting to kill us all right now…”

Crunch crunch crunch, that is the past week or so, leading up to this one. It’s going to be a busy one.

This weekend has been another one of visiting friends. Dave visited Friday night, and watched some cartoons with me before he went to see the play, while I spent the latter part of the evening napping. We chatted about the shutting down of 2D animation studios, and puppetry, and this and that.

Saturday Ken () came up to help me in the studio, which was really nice. He helped me make some large vessels, and gave me some ideas about how I make my armadillos. We worked practically all day long, and then helped Che pack up and clean out his show. We went to Guadi’s afterwards; it’s nice when you are so ravenous from the day that any meal tastes like it was sent from the heavens! YUM! Unfortunately, I was so exhausted by the day in the studio that I slept for the time afterwards before the play, so no work was accomplished.

That evening I went and saw The Beloved Community. They did a great job with the script that was given to them. Toooooooo many issues! On the up side, I did get to see Alison and Eric, which was great, they’re always a joy to be around. I also got to say hello to Evan later in the evening. With so many visits, it would have been logical for me to venture out and play the whole evening, but I was so tired.

I really am becoming a hermit this term. But, I think it’s working in my favor. Eh, oh well, time to write that art history research paper…

Massachusetts

Woohoo! Here I am in the Stockbridge Library, alive and well. Things are going great. I really love my job so far, and the people I work with are all really cool, I’m so busy that I hardly even notice my lack of internet…

Well, that’s not exactly true. Yesterday, we managed to get dial-up in the prop shop for research, and I was able to check my email for the first time in a few days. After I was finished, I walked outside. My boss noticed me, made a strange face, and said “You look like you just had sex! You’re SICK!”

Okay okay, so maybe I am a bit addicted to the internet, but I’m sure I’ll get over it. Some highlights from the past week.

– I drove up here with Jeff, and for the whole 900 miles of the drive, his cat, Pollock, rode on my lap. My first impression at Berkshire was me covered in cat fur, but I didn’t mind so much.

– It was cold here the first couple of days. The other day, I spilled a bowl of hot soup on my leg, and my first reaction was “Mmm, that feels really good…”

– While prop hunting yesterday, I came across a shop called “Needful Things.” Is that not a little creepy? In New England no less! I was almost sure that if I went in, I would be able to locate the more difficult props (like a 1930’s payphone), but that I’d have to sell my soul in return. I passed the shop quietly.

– There’s a glass gallery here! Right here in little ‘ole Stockbridge! I peeked in the window today, and they have Lino Tagliapietra stuff and Chihuly stuff and Billy Morris stuff! I’m going to have to go in there on Sunday and gawk and drool.

– So far, this is like summer camp for grown ups. However, you should take that with a grain of salt, as I’ve never been to summer camp before. Maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll get to update this journal every week or so (though, I’m afraid chances of getting my website updated look grim).

I hope everyone is doing well! Keep me informed of adventures on your end!

Spring Forward

I found Strother’s away message to be particularly insightful…

“I hate spring forward daylight savings time, we should just fall back 23 hours. A 23 hour period where people are not allowed to do anything but relax, sleep, and be happy.”

Although I’m losing an hour of my precious time, I’m still quite happy. It seems that the fates felt so sorry for putting me through 1st-half-of-spring-term-from-hell that they’re making things go extra smoothly for the last half. Since none of my classes will conflict in the fall, it is now certain that I can complete my comp sci major, and I filled out the official forms that upgraded it from a minor to a second major yesterday. Also, I’ve found a roommate! Yuliya (my roommate from freshman year) had her eyes set on Fox Hall as well, and was searching for roommates, so if we get one more girl we can try for the apartment. My application for Centre Internship Plus is almost completely ready to turn in tomorrow, so that’s another load off.

On the other side, the glass class I applied for at Corning was full, but I’m on the waiting list. I’m not terribly concerned, though, because it will eliminate the problem of figuring out how to get from Stockbridge to Corning at the end of the summer. Also, I’m sad that I won’t get to go to Conglomeration this summer, but I’m still going to send my art in to the art show (and who knows, there might be some slim glimmer of hope that I can go).

All in all, things are going well. Strother and I are going to sneak off to Lexington today to catch Spirited Away again, and the rest of the evening will be full of studying for this week’s tests.

Maaaaaagic

Today in theory…

The Pumping Theorem:

Let L be a regular language.
Then there exists n >=1 such that any string w that is an element of L with |w|>n,
there exists x, y, z so that w can be rewritten as w=xyz, such that y !=e, |xy|<=n, and xy^iz is an element of L for each i>=0.

Me: “So, where does the n come from?”
Dr. McAllister: “Oh, well, the n is sorta like magic.”
Class: “Ah, magic..mm, yes *note note note*.”

O.o

I’ve never known anyone to get so panicky over ironing a shirt!

“Will you help me do this?”
“Yeah sure, it’s easy, just take the iron and go chwoo chwoo chwoo and you’re done.”
“Okay okay…AHHH!! IT’S STEAMING!!”
“It’s okay!! That’s normal, that’s okay.”
“But what if it catches fire!”
“It won’t…”
“AHH!! It’s still wrinkled!!”
“Don’t worry, just go over it again..”
“AHHH!!”
“CALM DOWN!! It’ll be fine..”
“Okay okay…phew…alright…..GAHHH!”
“BRENDAN!!”

Anyway, dancing tonight, even though half the campus has the Centre plague. And I finally de-lazified myself and updated my site.
